About
Paul Finkelman received his BA from Syracuse University and his MA and Ph.D. in history from the University of Chicago. He was later a Fellow in law and humanities at Harvard Law School. He is the author/editor of more than 25 books and the author of more than 150 scholarly articles in history and law. In 2008 he was listed as one of ten most cited legal historians teaching in law schools. In 2009 he was elected as a member of the American Antiquarian Society.
He writes on slavery, antislavery, freedom of religion, freedom of speech and press, civil liberties, civil rights, Jewish history, legal history, African-American history, Abraham Lincoln, John Brown, Thomas Jefferson, US Constitutional history, and Baseball and the Law. He was the chief expert witness in the Alabama Ten Commandment Monument case and in the lawsuit over the ownership of Barry Bonds' 73rd Home Run ball. His work has been cited by the U.S. Supreme Court.
He has lectured and taught in the US, Canada, Great Britain, Austria, Colombia, Germany, and Japan, and serves as a "Distinguished Lecturer" for the Organization of American Historians (OAH).
